Pergolas

Shade you can still see the sky through, built in cedar over the patio or out in the yard.

A cedar pergola takes the edge off the Texas sun without closing the sky in. We design pergolas in Argyle and across North Texas for patios, pool decks, and garden seating: attached to the house, freestanding in the yard, with slats spaced for the shade you actually want.

Open Slatted ShadeFiltered light all day, so the patio stays bright instead of going dark.

Start with how much shade you want

Pergola Shade, Tuned by the Slats

A pergola is not one level of shade. The spacing of the top slats decides how much sun gets through, and we set it for your yard.

Wide spacing keeps the space bright and open. It suits a garden seat, or a patio that already gets tree shade for part of the day.

Tighter spacing, with a second layer of slats crossed on top, cuts the sun hard. On a west-facing patio it can feel close to a roof while the sky stays open.

Tell us how you use the space and we will set the spacing to match. Call 972-471-9167 to set up the free visit.

Pergolas Are Usually Just the Start

A pergola often anchors a bigger plan, and these are the projects we design around it, all in cedar and stone.

Types of Pergolas We Design and Build

Where it stands and how the top is built decide what a pergola does. These are the styles North Texas homeowners ask us for.

01

Attached Pergolas

One side carried by the house, the top reaching out over the patio. It shades the doors and windows along with the slab.

02

Freestanding Pergolas

Four or six posts and no connection to the house. Put one over a garden bench, a hot tub, or a seating area by the pool.

03

Slatted Top Pergolas

The classic open top. Parallel cedar slats throw moving stripes of shade that shift through the day.

04

Double Layer Pergolas

A second, smaller set of slats crossed over the first. The extra layer cuts the sun much harder for west-facing yards.

05

Gable Pergolas

A shallow peak along the top that echoes the roof of the house. It sheds leaves and gives the structure a finished profile.

06

Pergola and Cover Pairs

A solid cover at the house for rain, a pergola out in the yard for open sky. Many of our projects build both in one plan.

How the right pergola gets picked

The Pergola Has to Fit the Yard First

A pergola dropped in the wrong spot shades the lawn and leaves the chairs in the sun.

We start with the sun's path across your yard, morning to evening, and place the posts where the shade will land on your seating at the hours you use it.

Then we size it. Posts, beams, and slats are cut for the span, and the height is set so the top clears doors, fans, and sight lines from inside the house.

  • Post layout planned around where the shade falls at 4 p.m.
  • Slat spacing set for the light you want, bright or deep
  • Height cleared for doors, ceiling fans, and views
  • Stain matched to your trim, or left to weather naturally

The company behind the pergola

The JBN Group's Outdoor Living Division

Your pergola is designed and built by The JBN Group, Inc., through its outdoor living division, Argyle Patio Covers. The parent company has served North Texas since 1996.

From footings to finish

How Your Cedar Pergola Gets Built

A pergola is carpentry out in the open, and every joint shows.

Posts go on real footings, beams are fitted on site, and the slatted top is built board by board overhead. There is no kit and no flat pack in the truck.

  • Footings dug and posts set true and plumb
  • Beams and slats fitted and fastened on site
  • Slat spacing checked against the shade plan
  • Ends and edges finished clean, no rough cuts left
  • Yard and patio cleaned before the walkthrough

Why we plan at your house

The Sun Decides Where It Goes

Where a pergola belongs is written in your yard, not in a catalog.

Which way does the yard face? Where do the trees throw shade at noon? Which chairs are in full sun at dinner? Your yard settles all three in about five minutes.

So the first step happens at your home. We look at the light with you, measure the space, and sketch the pergola where it will actually stand.

Call 972-471-9167 and we will come look at your yard.

What North Texas Throws at a Pergola

  • Full summer sun that fades and cracks cheap wood
  • Storm winds that test every post and joint
  • HOA design rules in most newer neighborhoods
  • Clay soil that moves with the seasons under footings
  • Afternoon heat that lands hard on west-facing yards

Pergola Questions and Answers

What is the difference between a pergola and a patio cover?

A pergola has an open slatted top, so you get filtered shade and open sky. A patio cover has a solid roof that blocks sun and rain completely. Pick the pergola for light and air, the cover for full weather protection.

Does a pergola give enough shade in a Texas summer?

It depends on the slat spacing and which way your yard faces. Wide spacing gives light shade. Tight spacing with a second layer cuts the sun much harder, and we set the spacing for your yard at the design visit.

Should my pergola be attached or freestanding?

Choose attached to shade a patio against the house, and the doors and windows behind it. Choose freestanding to put shade anywhere else: by the pool, over a garden seat, or at the far end of the yard.

How long does a cedar pergola last?

Cedar resists rot and insects on its own, which is why we build with it. Left natural it weathers to a silver gray. A stain every few years keeps the color and adds protection against the sun.

Do I need a permit or HOA approval for a pergola?

Many North Texas cities require a permit, and most HOAs want to see the design first. We take care of the permit and the HOA approval as part of the job.

How much does a cedar pergola cost?

Size, post count, and slat style set the price. We measure at your home first, and the price from the free consultation is the full price, in writing, with nothing held back.
